The Filmoteque
Your movie collection, organised
Finding something to watch should be easier than searching through folders across multiple hard drives. The Filmoteque grew out of that frustration: a desktop application that turns a scattered movie collection into a library you can browse and organise in one place.

Built in Python, the application brings together movies stored across multiple drives, so your collection can grow beyond the capacity of a single disk. Each entry includes detailed information such as cast, director, writer, synopsis, cover art, runtime, and genre, alongside ratings from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

Movie information is retrieved through the OMDb API (The Open Movie Database). An internet connection is required when adding a new movie and fetching its details; once saved, your library can be browsed and managed offline.

You can mark movies as watched and give them a personal rating from 0 to 10, keeping track of what you have seen and what you thought of it. Search and filtering options include title, release year, genre, director, actor, writer, country, watched status, and personal rating. Combine these criteria to find an unseen movie from a favourite director, explore films from a particular country, or revisit your highest-rated titles.

Future plans include support for TV series, with a clear structure for seasons and episodes. I’m also exploring the possibility of rebuilding The Filmoteque as a web application, with cloud storage, streaming, and downloads for remote access to a personal library, alongside support for multiple users.
I’ll soon be releasing The Filmoteque as an open-source project on GitHub, so others can explore the code, adapt it, and contribute to its development.
